Grounding

Grounding is the practice of tying an AI-generated answer to specific retrieved documents or data so its claims can be traced to a source rather than produced from model memory alone. A grounded answer cites where each fact came from, which reduces hallucination and makes the underlying sources the brands worth being.

Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Perplexity all ground answers in live search results, which is why appearing in the retrieved set determines whether you are named. Grounding is the retrieval-time counterpart to training-data memory, and it is the faster of the two levers to influence.
