An AI citation is a source reference included in an AI-generated answer — the links Perplexity shows under every response, the reference cards on Google AI Overviews, or the sources ChatGPT search cites. Being cited means the AI retrieved and trusted your page; being cited often makes your domain a standing reference for the topic.
Citations are the most actionable signal in GEO: the domains AI repeatedly cites for your category are the exact places to get listed or mentioned. A brand can be cited without being recommended (your page used as a source) and recommended without being cited (named from training data) — tracking both tells you which lever to pull.
