Google AI Mode
Google AI Mode is a search experience in which Google answers a query with a multi-step, conversational AI response instead of a list of links, extending AI Overviews into an end-to-end generative interface. In AI Mode, being named or cited inside the generated answer replaces ranking as the visibility goal.
AI Mode breaks a complex question into sub-queries, retrieves sources for each, and synthesizes one answer — so a brand can be surfaced for a sub-question it never directly ranked for. It raises the stakes of GEO because there are even fewer blue links for a user to scroll past.
