A citation gap is the set of third-party sources — review sites, listicles, communities, publications — that AI answers cite for your competitors but not for you. It is the most actionable output of AI visibility tracking because it names the exact pages where earning a mention would close the distance.
Identifying the citation gap turns vague 'get more visible' advice into a concrete outreach list: the domains AI already trusts for your category and where a competitor currently occupies the slot. Closing it source by source is usually faster than trying to outrank an already-cited page from scratch.
